1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I believe our media product uses forms and conventions of real media so it is relatable to what people already would see in a film so it makes it easier for people to understand our opening. We also developed our opening scene from the normal forms and conventions of real media as we added our own little twist to our media product so it is not the same as what is already around, also we have challenged the forms and conventions by  doing something completely different and new to what you would see in a film like ours.

At first when we were deciding on what genre of film we should do we were unsure on what to pick between teen drama or a gangsta rap film. We spent a long time deciding which one to pick. As we couldnt make a decision we thought it would be something new to mix the two together.

We used the forms and conventions of a real media product in our opening by not giving too much away on what the film is going to be about and what is going to happen. This happens a lot in real films. They want to tell so much of the story, or have something that will entise the viewer to carry on watching, whilst at the same time not giving away what is going to happen. We believe we have done this as we chose to have no dialogue in the opening scene just music with the occasional diagetic sound which adds to the urban effect on the film. We have the walking scene with Tom and Me showing the difference in our class and status, using different things like location and lighting, which often happens in the openings in films where class and status is a key part of the film. Also at the end of the opening scene we had a little bit of me in the recording studio so it shows people that the film is music based and that the difference in class and status between the two main characters is strongly due to the music.

We think we have developed on normal forms and conventions by mixing the two genres of film together. Normally you would only see a film with only one genre but by having the two different genres that in itslelf is developing the forms and conventions of real media products. Normally films only have one type of person in it unless it is a steriotypical american comedy so as we have two, the gansta rapper which is Tom and the pretty indie successful rapper. These are two completely different types of people, except their love of music which they have in common. I think this will help teenagers, the target audience, relate to the film more as it has more in common with them as there is a different style of person, the indie, in a flim you wouldnt expect. This definately develops the forms and conventions of real media products as we have merged the two genres together and built a new genre of film upon that.

Finally I think we have definately challenged the forms and conventions of real media products purely by the non-diagetic soundtrack we have used. Personally I disagreed with the song we have used which is Rollin' in the Deep Jamie xx Shuffle by Adele. I think this song is too mainstream with the film we have and I think our film which the genre it is quite an edgy film which is the opposite of the soundtrack as that isnt edgy at all. However the lyrics and the beat of the song goes really well with the opening scene. Also as in a film like this you would never hear a soundtrack like the one we have used so it challenges the regular forms and conventions of a normal media product really well.
